CLARENCE K. HOUTZ LEGEND TRAIL

About the Trail

This trail was developed so that your unit will have a laid-out area for first

and second class hike requirements, and also to acquaint your scouts with the history of Anthony Wayne Reservation.

THE CLARENCE K. HOUTZ LEGEND TRAIL        6 miles Long

(Follow Yellow Markings on the trees and posts)

Over 50 years ago, Clarence K. Houtz established the Pokagon-Kekionga Trails Committee. This committee consisted, over the years, of many individuals who volunteered their time and talents, which made it a great success. The trails and treks provided a great variety of hiking experiences for hikers, bikers, and canoers. These trails provided the scouters not only great hiking, but also served as service projects for attaining rank advancement and various merit badges. All the trails offered fully embroidered patches and medals, available for purchase, to commemorate the completion of each trail.

On March 3, 2016, Clarence passed away as a result of brain cancer. To honor Clarence (Kay), a special patch was designed, depicting Clarence watching over a group of scouts hiking or camping one of the trails. This is a 3-1/2 x 5 inch fully embroidered patch. It is available for those hiking the “Clarence K. Houtz Legend Trail”. This trail is the former Chief Little Turtle Trail, located at the Anthony Wayne Scout Reservation (Scout Camp). One of Clarence’s wishes was for these trails to remain open after his passing. The Committee is honoring his request by keeping all our trails open.
